Surfing is the act of riding down a breaking wave, gathering speed from the downward and forward movement. Surfing was a central part of ancient Hawaiian culture, and the chief was the most skilled wave rider in the community with the best board made from the best tree.
There are an extensive health and physical benefits from surfing. Surfing is a great cardiovascular exercise, using mostly upper body muscles to do the paddling work, and leg muscles to guide the board once you’re up and riding. Since surfing involves more time paddling, it provides an intense upper body and core workout.
Surfing opportunities are limited in South Florida, but surfers enjoy warm, clear-blue water and periodically larger surf with better form. During South Florida’s hurricane season some of the best waves are formed.
